Clarkson University Student Chlesea Fanara of Snyder, N.Y., Inducted into Environmental Engineering Honor Society

2013 Jun 12

Chlesea Fanara of Snyder, N.Y., a Clarkson University senior majoring in environmental engineering, was inducted as one of the University's first members into the Tau Chi Alpha Environmental Engineering Honor Society.

"With the growth of environmental engineering undergraduate degree programs in the United States over the past 15 years, high-performing students have been looking for similar recognition common to traditional degree programs -- for example, chemical, civil, and mechanical and electrical engineering -- all of which have national honor societies," says Prof. Stefan J. Grimberg, chair of Civil & Environmental Engineering.

Richard Pope of Malcolm Pirnie, the Water Division of ARCADIS, conducted the inaugural ceremony for the chapter and also presented a lecture on odor control in wastewater treatment plants.

Inductees consist of juniors, seniors, and graduate students in the top one-third of their class, as well as environmental engineering faculty nominees.

A Tau Chi Alpha chapter at Clarkson University allows for environmental engineering students to be recognized for their educational and service related accomplishments within the field of environmental engineering. Graduate students who have completed one semester at Clarkson University and have shown a clear contribution to the field of environmental engineering are also deemed eligible for induction.

Along with student inductions, environmental engineering faculty are eligible for induction in order to foster an interaction between environmental engineering professionals and students at Clarkson University. Benefits to the students who are initiated include increased networking with professionals, other students, and alumni, and also a society to discuss current environmental engineering technologies.

The national chapter of Tau Chi Alpha was incorporated 1998 and is administrated and supported by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists, and the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and health sciences, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
