Clarkson University Student Mary-Kate Carr of Queensbury Completes Internship

2013 Jan 15

Mary-Kate Carr of Queensbury, N.Y., a Clarkson University senior majoring in digital arts and sciences, interned at General Electric in Shelton, Conn., last summer.

U.S. News & World Report has ranked Clarkson University #1 for having the highest rate of graduating seniors with internship experience.

Clarkson topped other "national universities," a U.S. News ranking of large research institutions, for the percentage of the class of 2011 with internship experience, at 86 percent. That's more than double the average rate for graduating seniors with internship experience at other national universities (30.4 percent), and at the 331 ranked colleges and universities that reported internship data to U.S. News in 2012 (37 percent).

"Many schools hail internships as a great way for students to supplement their academic and theoretical classroom study with practical experience. At Clarkson University in upstate New York, for example, real-world experience is at the heart of the school's educational programs, and at three of the schools within the university, completing a 'professional experience' is a prerequisite for graduation," according to an article published in U.S. News.

The article can be found at http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/the-short-list-college/articles/2012/11/20/10-national-universities-that-produce-the-most-interns.

In August, Clarkson again made the U.S. News rankings of "Best Colleges," placing in tier one, the top tier of national universities, with a ranking of 115, up four places from last year's ranking.

Clarkson is also #34 on the U.S. News "Great Schools at Great Prices" list (Best Value Schools), which takes into account a school's academic quality, as indicated by its 2013 U.S. News Best Colleges ranking, and the 2011-2012 net cost of attendance for a student who receives the average level of need-based financial aid.

ABC News and PayScale list Clarkson as one of 12 schools whose new graduates earn more than Harvard's. Clarkson seniors are hired by more than 170 different companies annually and 96% of Clarkson students place in their field of study or career aspiration their first year out.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and health sciences, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
