Clarkson University Student Receives Award for Testing and Analysis of Student Designed Aircraft

Potsdam, NY (05/19/2025) — Clarkson junior aerospace engineering student Jack Snyder, from Potsdam, NY placed second in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Region 1 student conference undergraduate paper competition, which was held March 20 and 21 in Montreal.

Snyder's paper, titled "Structural Analysis and Testing of a Student-Designed UAV Wing" reported on an analysis and testing campaign that aimed to validate the design of Clarkson's Design/Build/Fly (DBF) Student Projects for Engineering Experience and Design (SPEED) team and demonstrate that the wing could withstand the aerodynamic loads it would be exposed to during flight.

The judges commended Snyder for his rigorous application of the scientific method and that the process he followed could be adopted by other student teams to ensure their aircraft meet competition requirements.

Snyder is the structures subgroup leader for DBF and is part of the group's technical board.

The award presentation comes less than three weeks before the Clarkson University Knighthawks are set to compete in the 2025 AIAA DBF competition, being held in Tucson, Arizona.
